A healthy cooling system helps protect a heavy-duty diesel engine from overheating, corrosion, and expensive damage. This guide covers common cooling-system symptoms, coolant-filter problems, and the basic checks to make before calling for service.
Safety note: Never remove a radiator cap or surge-tank cap while the engine is hot. Hot coolant and steam can cause serious burns. Let the engine cool completely and follow the manufacturer's service procedures.
After the engine has cooled, check the coolant level and look for obvious leaks around the radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat housing, and surge tank. Inspect the radiator and charge-air cooler for dirt or blockage that could restrict airflow. A slipping belt, failed fan clutch, thermostat problem, water-pump issue, or restricted radiator can also contribute to overheating.
If the temperature rises quickly, coolant is being pushed out, or the engine overheats under load, stop operating the truck until the cause is identified. Continued operation can cause major engine damage.
Low coolant is a symptom, not a repair. Look for wet spots, dried coolant residue, damaged hoses, loose clamps, radiator damage, and leaks around the water pump or engine. Do not rely on repeated top-offs without finding the source of the loss.
Use the coolant type and mixture specified by the engine manufacturer. Mixing incompatible coolants or adding untreated water can reduce corrosion protection and create additional cooling-system problems.
Some heavy-duty diesel cooling systems use a coolant filter to help control debris and, on certain applications, manage supplemental coolant additives. A restricted, overdue, or incorrect filter can reduce protection and interfere with proper cooling-system maintenance.
Confirm the correct filter application and replacement interval for your engine. If the system uses supplemental coolant additives, test the coolant and maintain the additive level according to the engine manufacturer's requirements. Extended-life coolant systems may follow different procedures.

Oil in the coolant, heavy rust, scale, sediment, or a strong change in coolant color can indicate contamination or a cooling-system condition that needs attention. Do not simply install a new filter and continue operating if the coolant appears contaminated. The system may need testing, flushing, and inspection for the source of the problem.
Have a qualified diesel technician inspect the truck if it overheats, loses coolant repeatedly, shows oil and coolant mixing, develops excessive cooling-system pressure, or continues to run hot after basic checks. Cooling-system problems can quickly turn into head-gasket, cylinder-head, or engine damage.
